VFW Post 3377 Citizenship Education Teacher Award Winner 2009-2010

Since 1999 the Veterans of Foreign Wars has recognized a National Citizenship Education Teacher at the elementary, middle school, and high school level. These teachers are ones that regularly teach and promote America's history, traditions and institutions effectively. They consistently promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism in their classroom.

Teachers may be nominated by anyone. Each local VFW post may select a teacher at each level and then submit their winner/s to their District competition. Districts then forward their winners to Department (state) competition and then Departments to VFW National competition.

VFW Post 3377 and its Ladies Auxiliary is pleased to announce Ms. Katherine Deming, a Social Studies at Bedichek Middle School of the Austin Independent School District, as our post winner for 2009-2010. Her nomination letter, included below, clearly demonstrates that Ms. Deming is a teacher that meets the high standards of this award.

RE: National Citizenship Education Teacher Award

I would like to nominate Ms. Katherine Deming for the National Citizenship
Education Teacher Award. Ms. Katherine Deming has been a Social Studies teacher at
Bedichek Middle School for the last six years. During that time she has contributed
greatly to the articulation of the United States History Curriculum here at Bedichek
Middle School. Most importantly is her ability to turn students on to history and the
tenets of citizenship through the classroom and annual trips to Washington, D.C. during
the summer.

“Her caring attitude and superior knowledge of the subject matter make her
effective with students at all levels of ability. In fact, she is especially diligent with
students who have learning disabilities. Ms. Deming is creative and innovative in her
approach. She sets high standards for herself and her students and then works hard to see
that they are met. Ms. Deming is constantly broadening her knowledge, improving her
skills, and sharing with her peers what she has learned. She is currently gaining National
Board Certification.

Ms. Deming demonstrates the highest level of professional commitment and skill
in her work with students and colleagues. To carry out her professional responsibilities,
she gives generously of her valuable time and often her work extends beyond the school
day.

For all these reasons, I am nominating Ms. Katherine Deming for the VFW
National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

Bedichek Middle School
